You were taught that if you want to be relevant you cannot stop. That stopping is falling behind, and that the answer is always more. More optimizing, more momentum, more everything. Most of us have lived it, and if you are reading this you already know it is not true.

The ocean sets the tone for a different story. You cannot bully or force your way into the path of a mobula ray or a school of barracuda. A whale or a shark has no opinion about your résumé. In the presence of something that large and that indifferent, the old narratives start to seem inconsequential. In that encounter you can finally tell the difference between the external voices and the internal one.

Our base is just outside Horta, a working marina town on Faial and one of the great ocean crossroads on Earth. The volcanic beaches, the calderas and the deep seamounts pull the Atlantic's largest animals up toward the light. Faial itself is a study in renewal: in 1957 a new volcano rose off its western tip and added a mile of black land to the island in a matter of months. Destruction, and then the slow return of the life that was there before.

Led by people who've been there

Richard Banfield and Devon McDonald
01

Richard Banfield

Entrepreneur, author, and artist. Richard is a recovering CEO who has built companies, launched 100's of products, helped teams find purpose, and now helps people design the second act of their lives with intention and creativity.

02

Devon McDonald

Venture capitalist turned catalyst for connection, clarity, and courageous living. Devon brings grace, energy, and a gift for creating space where real transformation can happen. She’s raising three kids and building a life rooted in authenticity.

Together, they bring real-life experience, warmth, and wisdom to every part of this retreat. As Richard says, "Our approach is to create a classroom where everyone is the student. No gurus, nor masters, just curious minds that are open to possibility."

Roger Horrocks
03

Roger Horrocks

Underwater cinematographer and the eye behind My Octopus Teacher. Roger has spent fifteen years being let into encounters most people only ever see on a screen, shooting four of the six episodes of Blue Planet II, Our Planet and Netflix's Our Oceans, with a BAFTA and a Critics' Choice for his work. He learned the craft the slow way: first as a young spearfisherman learning to hold his breath, then as a filmmaker who found you cannot chase a wild animal into trust. You settle yourself. You get small. You wait to be met. On Faial he will choose the sites, read the water, and put each guest in the right place at the right moment to meet the ocean's largest animals on a single breath.

Get closer to yourself by encountering nature's wonders

White houses with red roofs above lava rock coves
A catamaran at anchor on flat open ocean
Mist over the crater floor and lake inside Caldeira do Faial
Brightly painted boat garages on a lane below green hills

Breath & Water

First-light swims off black sand volcanic beaches, breathwork built on the physiology of the free-dive, and yoga on the sand as the body warms. The same practice that lets you drop calmly to ten metres is the one you take home for the uncertainty of what comes next.

Wild Encounters

Guided snorkel and free-dive outings with Roger and crew to meet whales, mobula rays, sharks and barracuda. No scuba, no certification, no cages. Just you, a breath, and an experience you will not forget.

Stillness & Reflection

Meditation, somatic grounding, and the honest work of discernment—mission versus meaning, what to carry and what to set down. Practical work you can do anytime.

Optional Adventures

Come early or stay late. Faial's caldera and the lunar black of Capelinhos, a ferry to Pico to climb Portugal's highest peak or drink its volcanic wine, the natural swimming pools of São Jorge, the waterfalls of Flores.

What people say after they leave the retreats

"You couldn’t ask for a better guide to reinvention than Richard. He’s brilliant, curious, empathetic, and a great friend. He constantly challenges himself and those around him to do better, to be better, and anyone lucky enough to attend this retreat will leave renewed."
— Martin
"I just wanted to say thank you — these last few days at Second Harvest were some of the most meaningful I’ve had in a long time. I came in feeling raw and unsure, hoping to find what’s next, and I’m leaving with not just tools, but a community of people I can lean on as I work through a lot of transition, hurt, and healing."
— Nehal Patel
"I can not express how grateful I am for that weekend. Wow I am totally blown away. I really was soooo stuck and it’s helped me see a bit of a way out. It was incredible - you really were not kidding when you said it was going to be magic. Thank you thank you!!"
— Colleen Zulich
"Thank you so much for having me on this trip. It was such an honor to be part of this journey with you. Would love to connect when you’re back and continue this journey together!"
— Mary Grace Levin
This gave me clarity I did not realize I was missing. From the very first day, it surfaced beliefs I had been carrying for years without questioning them or even being aware of them. Seeing those stories clearly helped me understand how much of my urgency, fear, and pressure were rooted in old narratives about identity, safety, and aging.
— Kristen Shaheen
It was a punctuation in time that was much needed; reminding me to be intentional. I appreciated the experimental mindset vs. goal-driven one - which is usually what happens at the onset of any calendar year with resolutions where you are thinking in absolutes. I found this to be much more forgiving, softer, approachable, and framing it in this way felt like way less of a daunting, scrutinizing task and more like a nudge in the self-love direction.
— Lauren Sozio
By working through the combination of "ID" narratives and "OS" narratives and living in the questions, I've achieved an interesting new state of acceptance and curiosity. Instead of trying to optimize my way into a better self, I can instead pursue a felt-state (beginner's mind) to build around:.. openness, curiosity, presence, expression, humility, freedom from expectation, connection, etc. My freedom of movement seems to have increased. And, coincidentally or not, new doors appear to be opening. Super grateful, thank you!
— Brandon Comstock
The biggest realization for me was stepping back and recognizing how long I’ve been stuck in this uncomfortable space, fully identifying with the unhelpful narrative. I’ve been perpetuating this heavy cloud of despair and ruin—completely at odds with the optimistic, adventurous, "can-do-anything" dreamer version of myself. I’m hyper-aware of this now. And know people around me are noticing.
— Chris Merrill
I did day one [of the 72-Hour Reset} yesterday and was truly saddened by the stories that surfaced and how they’ve shaped me. Excited to reframe a few things in my life so I can move forward.
— JP Tanner
I really love how you two consciously create space for people to be vulnerable. It is quite beautiful and so appreciated - especially in a world that sometimes feels lonely, uncertain and polarized.
— Christine Holland
I really appreciate the continued engagement you’ve been offering after the 72-Hour Reset. The biweekly conversations and the effort you’re putting into keeping the community connected say a lot about what you’re building. All of this is landing at a meaningful transitional moment for me, so I’m grateful for the timing.
— Erik Bettencourt
Thank you for a wonderful overall Spring Summit event. The time and love you put into it was evident, and the positive energy was tangible. I loved the breathwork and visualization. The fireside chats were very inspirational. The vulnerability the speakers showed helped them be relatable.
— John Simonetta
I was observing the Spring Summit participants at all times, which is what I always do, and people seemed so connected and so engaged and really really moved by a lot of the conversation. I was so happy for you guys and so glad to be included.
— Kristin Cabot
I felt like I really needed this and it allowed me to take a step back and just pour into myself. It felt great also having some meaningful conversations and connections. You and Richard make such a great team and are doing something so special.
— Kim G
Thank you so much for the chance to join you all. It was so cool to see what you have built and experience it first hand. I came away with some great nuggets. The breath work and my third crop circle session were so dope!
— Bethany LoMonaco
Shit happens in life. In my case, as a CEO you really aren't afforded the mental space to process and adjust. Second Harvest creates an environment of similar beings with similar journeys. You can pause, reflect and set a new course or at the very least a new mindset allowing you to go forward in a more meaningful way.
— Jeff Dickerson
The anti-conference, that has set me on my path. I want to be part of Second Harvest for years to come.
— Elisabeth B
The synergy, empathy, and openness in the room felt like a warm blanket on a chilly day. I left feeling grateful, encouraged, and connected.
— Steve Woodward
I can't tell you how much I loved today's Spring Summit. Thank you for the thoughtfulness with which you brought us all together and helped us along our winding journeys.
— Angela P
I want you to know what I appreciate that WASN'T there: no scarcity sales pitch to join, no loud music and dancing before each session, no long intros for each speaker, no fist pumping your neighbor telling them "YOU can do this." I loved the space that was created, the invitation to be imperfect, the breath… the magic.
— Sandy A
More details to come, but Second Harvest and the 72-hour reset were the catalyst. I made changes at my company this week Team shuffles, getting stable, rebuilding. Love you, bye.
— Chris M
Richard, I can’t even begin to tell you but our life is changing faster than the trees whip by the window when you look HARD RIGHT out of your car when driving down I-95. I’ve made new friends and I’m just fucking blown away about the fact that I’ve tapped into a whole other stratosphere of life, that I never even knew existed before reconnecting with you and Devon. I really want to thank you.
— Randy B
It was such a pleasure spending a day with you all last month. Such a meaningful and impactful fellowship.
— Tucker Hamilton
I also want to share why this experience was so special to me. You helped me discover feelings and possibilities I didn’t know existed. I felt safe to be myself and share my most vulnerable moments without judgment. This was not easy to do but I did it and came out of it stronger because I felt seen and celebrated by each of you. I’m incredibly grateful for the space you created for me to simply be and trust. You all are a gift.
— Susanna Yee
It was such a great experience with amazing people! So much better than I would have thought. I’ve learned more about myself by observing and listening to you all. I loved every sunny day of it and will keep it as a beautiful memory. Thank you all and love to see you someday somewhere!
— Kenny Morrell
“The retreat gave me emotional clarity I didn’t know I needed. I came looking for quiet and reflection, but what I found was connection. I left with friendships and a renewed sense of courage for what comes next.”
— Suzanne Balassone
I had no idea what I'd be walking into, but I was so happy to be a participant. The energy was real, and the impact was palpable for folks. I suspect that's not an easy emotion to create, so kudos. And, I met some very cool humans.
— Peter Zotto
“There is something rare about being truly seen, and that’s what happened at Second Harvest. It wasn’t about performance, but presence. I left with more than memories — I left with allies.”
— Jennifer Linehan
“The biggest surprise was how much laughter and lightness accompanied the depth. I came expecting something serious and got that, but also joy, play, and the power of pausing. It was exactly what I didn’t know I needed.”
— Brad Stanton
“The retreat was a reminder that slowing down is not the same as stepping back. It’s actually moving forward with more intention. I found space to breathe, and in that space, new ideas emerged.”
— Natalie Fernandez
“We often spend our lives talking, but rarely do we spend them listening. In Austria, I was reminded that silence can be the most generous gift. Second Harvest taught me how to be present again.”
— Wouter Oudemans
“I thought I was coming for inspiration. What I received was transformation. A rare gift, not because it was flashy, but because it was simple, human, and true.”
— Nino Maisuradze
“What struck us was the intimacy of it all. Fireside chats, shared meals, quiet walks in the forest — these were not just activities, they were containers for courage and creativity to emerge. It reminded us why human proximity is the real luxury.”
— Bernhard & Kathrin

Second Harvest Retreat:
6-Day Journey to Your Next Chapter

Location: Horta, Faial, Azores

Date: August 2027

This retreat is for you if:

You look successful on paper but suspect the goals you are chasing were never really yours to begin with, and you are ready to find out which ones are

You have spent decades carrying, optimizing and adding, and you are quietly certain the way forward is to take something away rather than pile more on

You do not want another framework or motivational push. You want an experience that meets you in the body, with a small circle of people asking the same honest question: now what?

A rigid inflatable boat moored at Horta marina at dusk

FAQs

Why the Azores? Why Faial?

Because the ocean makes the point better than any workshop can. The waters off Faial and Pico are a Mission Blue Hope Spot, one of the few places on Earth where the biggest animals in the sea come up within a breath-hold of the surface. Horta is a real working marina town, not a resort, so boats leave from the door. And the island itself, remade by a volcano within living memory, is a standing argument that renewal is the far side of loss. It is the rare place where the setting is the curriculum.

Do I need to be a diver? Can I actually do this?

No scuba, no certification, no experience required. Everything happens on snorkel and breath-hold, at the surface or a few metres down. The one real prerequisite is that you are comfortable swimming in open water. Certified free-dive safety staff are in the water on every outing. Alongside Roger, Richard is a trained Divemaster and Rescue Diver, and the boat team includes two to three certified members. Roger guides and films; safety is separately and professionally staffed. Snorkelling is encouraged but every water activity is optional. You set your own edge.

What’s included in the retreat?

Everything except your flights to the island. Your investment covers accommodation in Horta, all meals and drinks, every boat expedition and in-water session, free-dive guiding and safety, breathwork, yoga, meditation, and all ground transport to activities.

How do I apply?

Click Apply on this page. Once we receive your application we will set up a short conversation to make sure it is a great fit, for you and for the group. If it feels right on both sides, we will send a private payment link to secure your place.

What if I’ve already attended a retreat?

You are welcome back. The structure will feel familiar, but the experience is wholly its own. New experiences, new people, new encounters, new ground to cover. Many Harvesters return as part of a seasonal rhythm.

Who is Roger Horrocks?

The underwater cinematographer behind My Octopus Teacher, along with Blue Planet II, Our Planet and Netflix's Our Oceans. He has spent fifteen years earning the trust of wild animals on their terms, and he will be with us in the water the whole time, choosing the sites, reading conditions, and bringing the encounters.

What are the physical demands of this retreat?

Moderate and self-paced. Expect early shoreline swims, breathwork, gentle yoga, and boat days that can run long. The offshore seamount trip is a full day on the water, six to seven hours in total. Comfortable open-water swimming is the baseline; everything beyond that is optional.

What should I pack?

Swimwear, light layers, a light waterproof jacket, hat, and reef-safe sunscreen. If sea water irritates your eyes, pack swim goggles too. We will advise on wetsuit thickness once dates are set, and we can arrange exposure gear. We provide journals, but bring your own if you prefer. And leave a little extra room in your bag, because you will go home with more than you arrived with.

What will we actually see?

The honest answer is that wild animals keep their own schedule and nothing in the ocean is guaranteed. What we can tell you is the calendar. Mobula rays (late June to October), blue sharks (mid-July to mid-October) and barracuda are a summer story. The great migratory whales, blue and fin, pass through in spring. You are very likely to see the resident sperm whales and dolphins that are here year-round. We plan around the animals, not the other way around, and we build in flexibility for weather.

What’s the retreat investment?

Pricing is $8,750 for a single room and $12,275 for a double room (plus one guests, like spouses or partners). A payment page is shared once you’ve applied and we’ve had a short alignment call. This helps us keep the experience tailored, intimate, and intentional. Pricing includes all lodging, food, drinks, programming, and local experiences.

What’s your weather and cancellation policy?

The ocean sets the terms. If conditions close the water on a given day, we adjust, and there is always more than one way to spend a day on Faial. For guest cancellations: cancel 60 days or more before the retreat and we will refund your payment minus a 35% fee to cover advance booking costs. Within 30 days we will do our best to transfer your spot to a future retreat if openings exist, but no refund is provided.

Who is Second Harvest for?

Second Harvest is for people in the middle of life who look successful on paper but feel misaligned inside. They have built careers, businesses, families, reputations. They have done what was expected of them, and done it well. What has changed is not their ability but their relationship to how they are spending their time. It is an exhaustion rather than a crisis. Motivation still exists, but they are after meaning. The old goals do not pull like they used to. They do not want another productivity system, self-help framework or motivational push. They are not broken and they are not looking to be fixed. They value depth over hype, real conversation over performance. They are not trying to escape their life, they are trying to redesign it.
